When I think of crypts, catacombs, and underground towns, the first thing that comes to mind is antiquity. There is a necropolis beneath the Vatican Basilica, as well as ancient Egyptian burial crypts. The famed Catacombs in Paris and Palermo are not to be missed. A crypt is a "compartment, such as a vault, entirely or partly underground, especially: a vault beneath the main floor of a church," according to the dictionary.
